today's office

Been doing some ad work and some rebranding projects over the last few weeks, a few with the great people over at CUBICLE FUGITIVE ; always entertaining. Anyhow, this was the view outside our location today. Our little city growing up...and up.

New strands of light

I was privileged to be included in the CONTACT portfolio reviews this past weekend and had some great meetings with some really interesting and cool folks; from around the world. It's always nice to get some good feedback and have people point the compass in the right direction. Lots of other good work seen and exhibited too. It's inspiring to know photography is still important and doing great things.

Duncan - on instagram

Duncan's new gallery is up. April 2013..all instagram this month. Still not sure about this. Passing fad (likely) or the start of the new wave of photography? Gimmicks are never sustainable but they do sometimes allow for the envelope to be moved..not necessarily pushed..but moved.

hmmm

Finally been toying around with instagram...still not sure. Just means less time doing what photographers are supposed to do I think. More to come nonetheless.

Fisher 21

Going into abandoned building is not always the best idea.  Detroit has the largest and most notorious abandoned complexes in the world where all types of nefarious activity is likely underway.

The fisher 21 Plant is one of the most interesting and until recently seems to have been fortified to prevent further explorers and scrappers. Last year the fenced complex was a police impound.

This time around, as happens in Detroit, the police pound is no longer and some of the huge industrial machinery that was found on the exterior of the former car plant has been removed...presumably by scrappers.

Built in 1919 by famed architect Albert Kahn the Fisher 21 plant was a prestigious factory that produced Cadillac bodies through the 20s and 30s. Today it is a hulking abandoned plant that was deemed to be contaminated by the EPA after a lifetime of industrial undertakings and chemical use.

Discarded

Coming towards the final stretch of a project is always like being on a long portage carrying a really heavy pack and a canoe digging into your shoulder and then suddenly feeling the slight breeze of the lake ahead and then seeing the flickering blue of the water through the trees. It's a sense of relief and also moving ahead. This is a picture of discarded items found in Detroit.

Dark Matter

Just published a quick post on the Detroit book I'm working on. Looks like scrapper thieves have begun stealing copper in street lights. Read more about it here.

Can sometimes really mess things up..or reveal things that you wouldn't have otherwise found.

Amen for getting it done

I'm getting ready for some re-entry on some large projects that have seemingly taken way longer than I ever thought. Nevertheless, like good food..sometimes things take time. Whether it's procrastination or incubation, distance can often lead to a renewed sense of clarity. Being a big believer in what I would term the "obligation of creativity" it's just sometimes good to get off one's backside and finish some shit.

I am often reminded how much of a privilege it is to be allowed into people's lives and connect and come away with some images. It's usually a rich experience..for both of us. It's personal, cathartic, revealing and intimate...and fleeting. Here's a sneak peek above and for more of what  I'm talking about you can check out this: www.americandreamsproject.org

New Duncan

Just posted Duncan's December 2012 gallery up. Were a little slow off the mark for 2013, however as Duncan is going into his 10th year, look out for a likely retrospective of his entire life, as captured here each month: www.duncanthedog.com

Greg

Back in the summer I did a project, which I mentioned briefly before, with a really interesting guy, Greg Hambleton. He was a spirited musician and producer who had some success, fell on hard times and then lost his eyesight. Fast forward to 2012 and with the help of his daughter and some friends  went on to record a beautiful record of material. He's a good spirit and a very humble guy. The best kind of people to work with. You can learn more about his music here Greg Music.
